The KORAIL Pass can look like an obvious choice if you plan to travel around South Korea by train. Pay once, take KTX and other eligible KORAIL trains, and avoid buying every ticket separately.
But that does not automatically make the pass cheaper.
For some itineraries, especially a simple Seoul–Busan round trip, individual tickets may cost less. The pass becomes more interesting when you add enough eligible long-distance train journeys within its travel-day rules.
The best way to decide is not to ask whether the KORAIL Pass is “good.” It is to compare the pass price with the trains you actually plan to take.
Use the calculator below first, then check the rules that can change the decision.
KORAIL Pass Savings Calculator
Enter the regular ticket prices for the eligible train journeys you actually plan to take.
Choose the pass you are considering, add your train fares, and compare the two totals.
Important: The calculator is a planning tool, not an official KORAIL booking system. Train fares, eligibility and pass conditions can change. Confirm your actual trains and fares on the official KORAIL website before buying.
KORAIL Pass Savings Calculator
Compare your planned eligible train tickets with the current adult KORAIL Pass price.
KFR planning tool. Enter only journeys that are eligible under the current KORAIL Pass rules. Always confirm current fares, train eligibility and seat availability with KORAIL before purchase.
How to Read the Result
KORAIL PASS MAY BE WORTH IT means your entered individual-ticket total is higher than the selected pass price.
CLOSE CALL means the difference is small enough that flexibility, seat availability and your actual itinerary may matter more than a modest saving.
INDIVIDUAL TICKETS MAY BE BETTER means your planned trains currently cost less than the pass.
The calculator also shows how much additional eligible rail travel you would need before reaching the break-even point.
Do not add subway, city bus or SRT fares as eligible KORAIL Pass train travel unless the current official rules specifically include them.
How Much Does the KORAIL Pass Cost in 2026?
KORAIL currently lists four Select Pass options.
| KORAIL Pass | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Day Select Pass | ₩131,000 | ₩66,000 |
| 3-Day Select Pass | ₩186,000 | ₩93,000 |
| 4-Day Select Pass | ₩234,000 | ₩117,000 |
| 5-Day Select Pass | ₩275,000 | ₩138,000 |
KORAIL defines adults as travelers aged 13 or older and children as ages 6 to 12. Its current rules also allow up to one child under six to travel free with one adult aged 13 or older.
These are not simply two, three, four or five consecutive calendar-day passes.
Under the current Select Pass structure, you choose the required travel days within a 10-day period from the pass starting date.
That can make the pass more useful for a traveler who wants to spend several nights in a city before taking the next long-distance train.
Is the KORAIL Pass Worth It for Seoul to Busan?
This is where many travelers should stop and calculate before buying.
Since September 1, 2026, KORAIL’s announced standard Seoul–Busan KTX fare has been reduced from ₩59,800 to ₩54,400 as part of Korea’s high-speed rail integration.
At ₩54,400 each way:
Seoul → Busan: ₩54,400
Busan → Seoul: ₩54,400
Round trip: ₩108,800
Compare that with the current adult 2-Day Select Pass:
2-Day KORAIL Pass: ₩131,000
The individual round-trip tickets are therefore ₩22,200 cheaper in this simple example.
That is the first major lesson of this guide:
Do not buy a KORAIL Pass automatically just because you are taking the KTX from Seoul to Busan and back.
If those are your only two major train journeys, check individual tickets first.

When Does the KORAIL Pass Start to Make Sense?
The calculation changes as you add more eligible long-distance rail travel.
Imagine a traveler who does not simply travel from Seoul to Busan and back.
Instead, the itinerary might include:
Seoul → Busan
Busan → another city
another city → Seoul
Or the traveler may make several long-distance trips from Seoul during the same vacation.
The correct calculation is:
Total price of eligible individual tickets
versus
Price of the appropriate KORAIL Pass
If the individual tickets total ₩150,000 and the relevant pass costs ₩131,000, the pass has a potential ₩19,000 price advantage.
If the tickets total only ₩115,000, buying the ₩131,000 pass purely to “save money” would not make sense.
This is why the number of cities alone is not enough. The actual eligible rail journeys and fares matter.
Four Korea Itineraries Compared

1. Seoul and Busan Only
Suppose you stay in Seoul, take the KTX to Busan, spend several days there and return to Seoul.
Using the current Seoul–Busan standard fare example:
Individual tickets: about ₩108,800
2-Day KORAIL Pass: ₩131,000
For this itinerary, individual tickets are the stronger starting point.
2. Seoul, Busan and Another Rail Destination
Adding another meaningful intercity rail journey can move the calculation closer to the break-even point.
Do not assume it will automatically make the pass cheaper.
Search the actual trains you plan to take, add their regular fares in the calculator, and compare the result with the relevant pass.
3. Several Long-Distance Train Days
This is where a KORAIL Pass can become much more interesting.
A traveler making multiple expensive eligible rail journeys on two, three or more selected travel days may accumulate enough individual fares to exceed the pass price.
The pass can also reduce the need to evaluate the cost of each additional eligible KORAIL journey separately.
However, seat reservation rules and availability still matter.
4. Seoul-Based Trip With Mostly Subway Travel
The KORAIL Pass is usually a poor match if most of your trip is spent sightseeing within Seoul.
Seoul subway travel is not the same thing as long-distance KORAIL train travel.
If your itinerary is mostly Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gyeongbokgung, Seongsu and other places within Seoul, start with our Seoul subway guide rather than assuming you need a national rail pass.
What Trains Can You Use With the KORAIL Pass?
According to KORAIL’s current foreign-language guidance, the pass can be used on eligible passenger trains operated by KORAIL.
These include KTX services and eligible regular trains such as ITX-Cheongchun, ITX-Saemaeul, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa and Nuriro.
However, having a pass does not mean every train in South Korea is automatically included.
That distinction matters when calculating whether the pass is worth buying.
What Does the KORAIL Pass Not Cover?
KORAIL currently states that the pass cannot be used on:
- metropolitan subway trains
- certain special tourist trains
Korea’s high-speed rail system changed substantially in September 2026, including the integration of KTX and former SRT operations. Travelers should therefore check the current KORAIL booking system for their specific train rather than relying on older articles that describe the previous KTX/SRT structure.
This is especially important when reading travel advice written before September 2026.
KORAIL Pass vs Individual KTX Tickets
There is no universal winner.
Individual tickets are usually easier to justify when:
- you are taking only one or two long-distance journeys
- your total fare is below the pass price
- your itinerary is already fixed
- most of your transportation will be local subway or bus travel
The KORAIL Pass becomes more attractive when:
- you have several eligible long-distance rail journeys
- the combined regular fares exceed the pass price
- your travel days fit the Select Pass structure
- you understand the seat-reservation rules
- the trains you plan to use are actually covered
The calculator at the top of this guide is designed around exactly this decision.
How Do Seat Reservations Work?
A rail pass does not mean you should ignore seat availability.
KORAIL currently allows pass holders to reserve seats from one month before departure.
Its official guidance says a traveler can select up to two tickets per person per day under the pass rules.
If reserved seats are sold out, KORAIL states that a valid pass holder may use standing travel where permitted, but this is obviously less comfortable than having a confirmed seat.
For a first-time traveler, the practical lesson is simple:
Buying the pass and reserving the train are two separate steps.

If you are traveling on a busy date, do not wait until the last moment just because you already own a pass.

What Is KORAIL Pass Plus?
KORAIL launched KORAIL Pass Plus for international visitors at the end of 2025.
The product combines a KORAIL Pass with a Rail+ prepaid transportation-card function.
After buying an eligible KORAIL Pass, travelers can currently pay an additional ₩8,000 to add the transportation-card service.
But there is an important distinction.
The extra ₩8,000 does not mean your subway and bus rides become unlimited or automatically free.
You load your own prepaid balance onto the transportation-card function and then use that balance for public transportation and supported payments.
Think of it as combining two functions:
KORAIL Pass → eligible intercity rail travel
Rail+ prepaid balance → subway, bus and supported everyday payments
That can be convenient, but it should not be counted as free local transportation when deciding whether the KORAIL Pass itself saves money.
Does the KORAIL Pass Include Seoul Subway Travel?
Not as unlimited free subway transportation.
This is one of the easiest ways to overestimate the value of the pass.
If you spend one day taking the subway around Seoul, those trips should not simply be added to the KORAIL Pass savings calculation.
For Seoul transportation, compare the appropriate local transit options separately.

A Better Way to Calculate Your Rail Budget
Before buying the pass, make a simple list.
For each long-distance train you genuinely expect to take, write down:
Route
Travel date
Regular ticket price
Whether the train is KORAIL Pass eligible
Then total only the eligible journeys.
Do not add hypothetical trips simply to make the pass look cheaper.
This same principle applies to your larger Korea budget. A rail pass should be evaluated as one transportation expense within the entire trip, not as a separate “deal” that must be purchased.
You can use our South Korea trip cost and budget calculator to see how intercity transportation fits alongside accommodation, food, local transportation, attractions and shopping.

KFR Decision Framework: Should You Buy the KORAIL Pass?
Buy Individual Tickets First If:
Your itinerary is mainly Seoul plus one Busan round trip.
Your eligible individual fares remain below the pass price.
You will spend most of your trip using subway and city buses.
You are adding unnecessary train journeys only to justify the pass.
Consider the KORAIL Pass If:
You are making several expensive eligible intercity train journeys.
Your calculator result shows a meaningful saving over individual tickets.
Your journeys fit within the Select Pass travel-day rules.
You have checked seat availability and understand how reservations work.
Check Again Before Paying If:
Your result is close to break-even.
A small saving is not always worth restructuring an itinerary around a pass.
If the difference is only a few thousand won, route convenience, departure time and seat availability may be more valuable than maximizing the theoretical saving.
The Bottom Line
The KORAIL Pass is not automatically the cheapest way to travel around South Korea by train.
For a simple Seoul–Busan round trip, current 2026 fares can make individual KTX tickets cheaper than the 2-Day Select Pass.
The pass becomes more compelling when you add enough eligible long-distance rail travel to cross the break-even point.
So calculate first.
Add the trains you actually plan to take, compare their total with the pass price, and buy the KORAIL Pass only when the numbers — and your itinerary — make sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the KORAIL Pass worth it for Seoul to Busan?
Not necessarily. Using the current standard Seoul–Busan fare of ₩54,400 each way, a round trip totals ₩108,800, which is below the current ₩131,000 adult 2-Day Select Pass. Check the actual fare for your travel date before buying.
How much is the KORAIL Pass in 2026?
KORAIL currently lists adult Select Pass prices of ₩131,000 for 2 days, ₩186,000 for 3 days, ₩234,000 for 4 days and ₩275,000 for 5 days.
Does the KORAIL Pass include KTX?
Yes. Eligible KTX services operated under KORAIL are a core use of the pass, subject to current pass and reservation rules.
Does the KORAIL Pass include the Seoul subway?
The standard rail-pass benefit should not be treated as unlimited free Seoul subway travel. KORAIL Pass Plus can add a prepaid Rail+ transportation-card function, but you must load your own transportation balance.
Do I still need to reserve a seat with a KORAIL Pass?
You should reserve seats for the trains you plan to take when possible. Owning a KORAIL Pass and having a reserved seat are separate things.
Can I use the KORAIL Pass on any train in Korea?
No. Eligibility depends on the operator and train type. Check your specific service in the current KORAIL system before assuming it is covered.
