Landing at Incheon International Airport is the easy part. The first real travel decision comes after immigration and baggage claim: how should you get into Seoul?
For most travelers, the choice comes down to four options: the AREX Express Train, AREX All-Stop Train, airport limousine bus or taxi.
There is no single best option for everyone.
A train can be fast and predictable, but it may still leave you with a subway transfer. A bus can take longer in traffic but drop you much closer to your hotel. And a taxi costs considerably more, but can make sense when several people are traveling together with luggage.
Here is how to choose.

It is “Which one gets me closest to where I am actually staying?”
AREX Express: Best for a Direct Trip to Seoul Station
The AREX Express Train runs nonstop between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station.
According to current Seoul Metropolitan Government information, the journey takes approximately 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2.
The current listed one-way fare is KRW 13,000.
That makes the Express Train particularly convenient if:
- your accommodation is near Seoul Station;
- you plan to transfer to KTX or another train at Seoul Station;
- you want to avoid road traffic; or
- you prefer a straightforward airport-to-city rail journey.
But “Express” does not automatically mean fastest to your hotel.
If your accommodation is in Hongdae, for example, traveling all the way to Seoul Station and then transferring back toward Hongdae may be less convenient than taking the All-Stop Train directly to Hongik University Station.
Always compare the complete airport-to-hotel journey rather than only the airport train time.
AREX All-Stop Train: Often Better for Hongdae and Other Stops
The AREX All-Stop Train follows the airport railway into Seoul but stops at multiple stations along the way.
Important stops include:
- Gimpo International Airport;
- Digital Media City;
- Hongik University;
- Gongdeok; and
- Seoul Station.
Current Seoul guidance lists the journey to Seoul Station at approximately 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and 66 minutes from Terminal 2, although individual train times can vary slightly.
The All-Stop Train is especially useful for travelers staying around Hongdae.
Hongik University Station is directly on the AREX route, so you can reach the area without first traveling to Seoul Station and doubling back.
Gongdeok can also be useful for accommodations in that part of central-western Seoul and for connections to other subway lines.
The trade-off is simple: the journey takes longer than the Express Train to Seoul Station because the train makes multiple stops.

Think about your destination rather than the train name.
Staying near Seoul Station?
The Express Train is a strong option.
Staying around Hongdae?
The All-Stop Train is often more direct.
Staying somewhere that requires a subway transfer either way?
Compare the transfer station, total travel time and how far you will need to walk with luggage.
This matters in Seoul because a transfer shown as a simple connection on a map can involve a substantial walk inside a large station.
If you are traveling with a large suitcase, saving one transfer may matter more than saving several minutes on the train itself.
Airport Limousine Bus: Convenient When It Stops Near Your Hotel
Airport limousine buses connect Incheon Airport with numerous areas of Seoul, including major hotels and popular visitor districts.
Current Seoul guidance gives a general travel time of approximately 60 to 80 minutes, depending on the route, destination and traffic.
Unlike rail, buses are affected by Seoul road conditions, so journey times are less predictable.
But they have one major advantage:
a useful bus stop may be much closer to your accommodation than a railway station.
That can make the airport bus particularly attractive if you have a large suitcase.
Imagine two options:
- a train journey followed by a subway transfer and a 10-minute walk with luggage; or
- a bus that stops a few minutes from your hotel.
The train may look faster on paper, while the bus may be easier door to door.
Before choosing a bus, check the current route and make sure you know which stop is closest to your accommodation.
What About a Taxi from Incheon Airport to Seoul?
A taxi is the most straightforward door-to-door option.
You leave the terminal, use the designated taxi area and travel directly to your accommodation.
It can be particularly useful when:
- two or more people are sharing the fare;
- you are traveling with children;
- you have several large bags;
- your accommodation is inconvenient by public transportation; or
- you arrive when your preferred rail or bus service is no longer practical.
But taxi pricing needs a little explanation.
Standard taxis operate under the applicable taxi fare system, and the final amount can depend on the destination, traffic, tolls and possible late-night surcharges.
Seoul also has an International Taxi service for overseas visitors. This is a distinct service and should not be confused with an ordinary street taxi.
For Incheon Airport–Seoul journeys, Seoul currently publishes zone-based International Taxi fares. Sedan rates range from KRW 70,000 to KRW 95,000, depending on the Seoul district.
Check the current official fare and service conditions before traveling rather than relying on an old fixed-price figure from a travel blog.
Which Option Is Best for Myeongdong?
Myeongdong requires a slightly different calculation because neither AREX service takes you directly into the neighborhood.
One option is to take AREX to Seoul Station and continue from there.
Another is to find an airport limousine bus serving a stop convenient for your accommodation.
If your hotel is close to an airport bus stop and you are carrying luggage, the bus can be attractive because it reduces transfers and station walking.
If road traffic is a concern, rail gives you a more predictable airport-to-Seoul Station segment.
Check your exact hotel location before choosing.
Two hotels both described as being “in Myeongdong” can have very different walking distances from the same station or bus stop.
Which Option Is Best for Hongdae?
Hongdae is one of the easiest areas to reach by airport railway.
The AREX All-Stop Train serves Hongik University Station directly.
That means many travelers staying around Hongdae do not need to take the Express Train to Seoul Station.
However, Hongdae is a large area, and some accommodations are a considerable walk from the railway exits.
Check your hotel on a map and, importantly, check the station exit number.
A direct train is useful, but dragging a suitcase across several busy blocks after leaving the station can change the calculation.
What If You Arrive Late at Night?
Late arrivals require more planning.
Do not assume trains and buses operate throughout the night.
Schedules vary, and special extended services announced for holidays should not be treated as normal daily schedules.
Before flying to Korea, check:
- your scheduled landing time;
- likely immigration and baggage-claim time;
- the last practical train or bus for your destination; and
- your taxi backup plan.
Remember that landing at 10:30 p.m. does not mean you will be standing at the airport railway platform at 10:35 p.m.
Immigration, baggage and finding the transportation center all take time.
If your flight arrives very late, knowing your backup option before departure makes the first night in Korea much easier.

Can You Pay with a Foreign Credit Card?
Payment options in Korea have become more convenient for international visitors, but they still differ by transportation type.
Current Korea Tourism Organization guidance indicates that foreign-issued credit cards can be used at standard AREX ticket machines.
That does not mean every Korean transportation card or every transit reader accepts an overseas bank card in the same way.

- an AREX ticket;
- a single-use transit ticket;
- a T-money transportation card; and

They are not interchangeable products.

Should You Buy T-money at Incheon Airport?
T-money is useful for the rest of your trip, but buying one does not automatically solve every airport transportation question.
The AREX Express has its own ticketing system.
The AREX All-Stop Train works differently, and Seoul transportation passes have specific coverage rules.
Most importantly, do not assume that buying a Climate Card means you can simply board at Incheon Airport and travel into Seoul with it.

Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2: Check Before You Travel
Incheon International Airport has two passenger terminals.
Both are served by AREX, buses and taxis, but departure points and travel times differ.
The AREX Express journey from Terminal 2 takes longer because Terminal 2 is farther along the airport railway line.
Always check whether your airline uses Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 before planning a tight connection or meeting someone at the airport.

The Simplest Way to Choose
For a first-time visitor, this is a useful starting point:
Choose AREX Express if Seoul Station is convenient and you want a direct, traffic-free rail journey.
Choose AREX All-Stop if a station such as Hongik University or Gongdeok is more useful for your accommodation.
Choose an airport bus if it stops close to your hotel and avoiding transfers with luggage matters more than having the most predictable journey time.
Consider a taxi if you are sharing the cost, carrying substantial luggage, traveling with children or arriving at a difficult hour.
The best airport transfer is not necessarily the one with the shortest advertised travel time.
It is the one that gets you and your luggage to your actual destination with the least unnecessary complication.
Once you arrive and drop off your bags, getting around Seoul becomes much easier.
