Essential Apps for Traveling in Korea: What to Download Before Your Trip

A little phone preparation can make your first day in South Korea much easier. You might need directions from a subway station to your hotel, help reading a Korean menu, or a way to book a train to another city.

The good news is that you do not need a phone full of Korea-specific apps. Start with a reliable map and a translation tool, then add transportation and travel services that match your itinerary.

Here is what each option is useful for, what to check before leaving home, and which services you can use without installing another app.

The Short List: Which Korea Travel Apps Do You Actually Need?

Travel situation App or service to consider Why it may help
Finding places and planning local routes NAVER Map Place searches, walking directions and public transport routes
Reading menus or asking simple questions Papago Text, image and voice translation
Navigating Seoul’s subway Seoul Subway Subway routes and station information
Booking an intercity train KorailTalk Train searches and booking
Booking a taxi k.ride or another compatible taxi service Requesting a ride through an app
Finding attractions and local travel information VISITSEOUL or VISITKOREA Official visitor information
Getting help with a travel question 1330 Korea Travel Helpline Phone and web-based assistance

You probably will not need every item in this table. Someone staying in central Seoul for three days has different needs from a traveler visiting Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan.

NAVER Map: For Finding Places and Getting Around

Traveler checking a map on a smartphone on a street in Seoul

NAVER Map is a useful starting point for navigating Korea. It can help you search for destinations, compare public transport routes and work out how to walk from a station exit to your accommodation.

The Korea Tourism Organization includes NAVER Map in its 2026 transportation-app guidance and lists English among its supported languages.

Save Your Destinations Before You Arrive

Before your flight, search for your hotel, airport transfer stop and a few places you plan to visit. Save their locations and check the route from the nearest station.

Keep the Korean address or place name in your booking confirmation as well. If an English search does not find the location you want, the Korean name may help you identify the correct result.

For a neighborhood visit, save a specific entrance or meeting point rather than relying only on a broad area name. This can be especially useful around large stations, shopping complexes and markets.

If you need a restroom while sightseeing, try searching for 화장실 or 공중화장실 in your map app. Our guide to public toilets in South Korea explains where to look and how to use the facilities.

What About Google Maps and KakaoMap?

You do not have to delete the map app you already use. However, check whether it provides the walking and transit directions you need for your specific Korean destinations.

KakaoMap is another local option. The practical choice is the app that helps you find your actual hotel, station exit and destinations reliably. Test those searches before you travel instead of assuming one app will handle every situation.

Papago: For Korean Menus, Signs and Conversations

Traveler using a smartphone to translate a Korean restaurant menu

Papago is a translation service developed by NAVER. For travelers, its most useful features include translating typed text, recognizing text in images and translating speech.

Imagine arriving at a small restaurant where the menu has limited English. An image translation tool may help you understand the available dishes, while a short translated sentence can help you ask about an ingredient. Our guide to eating at a Korean restaurant explains what to expect when ordering, using banchan and paying.

Translation is not guaranteed to capture every nuance. For food allergies, medical information or another important safety question, do not rely on an automated translation alone.

Can Papago Work Without Internet Access?

Papago offers offline translation for supported language pairs after you download the relevant language pack. Its official help documentation says offline text and voice translation are supported under specified device conditions.

There is an important limitation: offline image, conversation, website and document translation are not supported. Downloading a language pack does not make every Papago feature available without a connection.

If you expect to use translation frequently, prepare your language pack before departure and check which features work on your phone.

Seoul Subway: A More Focused Tool for Metro Journeys

If your itinerary involves frequent subway journeys in Seoul, the Seoul Subway app may be useful alongside your main map app.

Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced it for international visitors with features including route searches, station information and location-based guidance. It is a specialized option rather than something every visitor must install.

For a first-time trip, knowing the correct station exit and transfer route can be more useful than memorizing the subway network.

The app does not replace a valid ticket or transportation card. For fares, T-money, Climate Card options and the practical steps of riding the metro, read our Seoul subway and T-money guide.

KorailTalk: For Trips Between Korean Cities

A trip beyond Seoul may involve a KTX or another intercity train. Check KORAIL’s current official booking channels before travel, as high-speed rail booking services changed in September 2026. For routes better served by coach, our guide to express and intercity buses in Korea covers tickets, departure terminals and boarding.

The Korea Tourism Organization’s 2026 transportation-app guide lists KorailTalk as a train-booking option and includes English among its supported languages.

Check the route, departure station, arrival station, date and ticket conditions before paying. A train departing from one Seoul-area station may not depart from another, even if both stations are convenient for your hotel.

You do not need to install a train-booking app for a trip that never leaves Seoul. If you are traveling to Busan, however, compare your rail plans with the places you want to visit in our first-time Busan travel guide.

Taxi Apps: Check Registration and Payment Before You Need a Ride

A taxi app can be helpful when you have luggage, arrive late or want to enter a destination without explaining it aloud.

The Korea Tourism Organization includes k.ride in its 2026 transportation-app guidance as a service aimed at international travelers. Other taxi services may also be available, but registration and payment requirements can differ.

Install your chosen app while you still have a reliable connection. Check whether it accepts your phone number and intended payment method, and complete any verification steps before you are standing outside with your suitcase.

When a driver is assigned, confirm that the vehicle’s license plate matches the app. If you have already paid in the app, check the payment status before paying again in the taxi. For fare examples, street-hailing and the full pickup-to-payment process, see our Korea taxi guide for tourists.

VISITSEOUL and VISITKOREA: For Official Travel Information

A navigation app tells you how to reach a place. An official tourism service can help you decide what to do there and check visitor information.

VISITSEOUL is Seoul’s official travel service, with information about attractions, events and recommended routes. VISITKOREA covers travel information across the country.

These services are useful when you want an official starting point for sightseeing plans. You may not need to install both apps: their websites can also be useful while planning your trip.

For places with admission rules, restricted visitor hours or seasonal programs, check the attraction’s current official notice before you go.

Do You Need a Korean Phone Number to Use Travel Apps?

Not every app has the same registration requirements. A map or translation tool may be usable without a Korean phone number, while a booking or payment service may ask for additional verification.

Do not assume that buying mobile data automatically gives you a Korean voice number. A data-only eSIM, a physical SIM and a plan that includes local calling can serve different needs.

Our Korea eSIM vs SIM card guide explains the differences to check before choosing a mobile plan.

If a particular booking app is central to your itinerary, verify its registration and payment requirements before purchasing a connectivity plan around it.

What If an App Does Not Work When You Arrive?

Keep a few basic details available outside your apps: your accommodation address, booking references, a way to contact your travel companions and your payment provider’s support details.

If you need help with a travel question, the Korea Tourism Organization operates the 1330 Korea Travel Helpline. It offers telephone and real-time chat support, including a web-based chat option that does not require another app download.

For an immediate emergency, use the appropriate emergency service instead: 112 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance assistance. The tourist helpline is not a replacement for emergency response. Our South Korea emergency numbers guide explains when to call each service, how to request English interpretation and what information to provide.

Your Before-You-Fly App Checklist

A practical setup takes less effort than downloading every app you see recommended online. Since you will rely on your phone for directions and digital tickets, check your charging setup too: our Korea plug adapter guide covers the local outlets and charger compatibility.

Smartphone and practical travel essentials arranged before a trip to Korea
  • Install a map app and save your hotel, airport transfer stop and key destinations.
  • Install a translation tool and download any supported offline language pack you need.
  • Add a train or taxi app only if it fits your itinerary, then check registration and payment.
  • Make sure you have a working mobile data plan or another reliable connection.
  • Save important addresses and booking details somewhere you can access without an app.
  • Bookmark the official 1330 travel assistance page and keep emergency numbers available.

You can also check our guide to paying in Korea as a tourist before departure. A working travel app and a payment method accepted by that service are two different things.

The best Korea travel app setup is the one you understand before you need it. Start with directions and translation, then add the tools that solve problems on your particular trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NAVER Map better than Google Maps for traveling in Korea?

NAVER Map is a useful local option for finding Korean places and planning routes. Test the destinations and features you need on both apps before departure rather than assuming either will handle every journey.

Do I need both NAVER Map and KakaoMap?

No. Start with one map app that works well for your destinations. A second app can be a backup if you have trouble finding a particular place.

Is Papago free, and does it work offline?

Papago offers translation features and supports offline text and voice translation for certain language pairs after a language pack is downloaded. Feature availability and any applicable service terms should be checked in the current app. Offline image and conversation translation are not supported.

Do I need a Korean phone number for a taxi app?

Requirements depend on the service. Check whether your chosen app accepts your phone number, registration method and payment card before you arrive.

Do I need KorailTalk if I am only visiting Seoul?

Probably not. It is most relevant when you plan to search for or book intercity rail journeys. For travel within Seoul, a map app and subway information may be more useful.

What app should I use if I need help in Korea?

For general travel questions, use the official 1330 Korea Travel Helpline by phone or web chat. For an immediate police, fire or medical emergency, call 112 or 119 as appropriate.
